Women in recent children’s movies

Hey everyone,

I’ve watched both Enchanted and TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for those that don’t know) recently and noticed something. Women are being portrayed differently in children’s films.

In Enchanted the princess started off as the stereotypical can’t think for herself princess, but in the end she was the hero.

In TMNT, April O’Neil is no longer a reporter who can’t do anything about the situation. She even knows how to fight with swords and is good. I kind of miss the fact that she is no longer a reporter (in fact I’m not sure what her job is anymore. She was selling statues.), but her cool factor is much higher now. A woman was also in charge of the foot clan which was cool.

I would like to think that this is a continuing trend. Kids growing up need to know that women can be cool and don’t have to be weak or saved all the time. How do you think women are being portrayed in movies today? And what do you think about it?
